The best Sonicare toothbrushes, and how to read Philips' model numbers
The best Sonicare for most people is the 5900 (about $90). On a budget, the 4100 (about $50, refreshed in July 2026); for the app and a charging case, the 7300 (about $140); for everything, the 9900 Prestige.

Philips Sonicare has more models than it needs, and the names don’t tell you which motor is inside. The short version: the 4100 is the value pick, the 5900 is the one to buy if you want Philips’ 2026 range, the 7300 adds the app, a light-ring pressure warning and a charging case, and the Prestige 9900 is the flagship. Everything else is a variation.

Not sold by Amazon US when we checked: the 2026 Sonicare 7100 (only one imported European unit, HX7421/06, from a reseller), Philips One, and the Sonicare 5000 Series, which Philips launched through other retailers.
How to avoid buying the wrong one
- Read the model number, not the name. It’s the only reliable way to tell the 4100 versions apart, or the two Prestige brushes.
- Check the seller. Several Prestige colours were offered by resellers at different prices on the same day. We link to listings sold by Amazon.com.
- Count the heads. The 5300 (three heads), 7300 (three) and the five-head Prestige bundle look pricier than they are.
Sonicare heads, quickly
All current adult Sonicare handles use the same click-on fitting. Genuine heads carry a BrushSync chip that lets newer handles remind you to replace them. Prices on October 30: C2 about $10.26 a head (three-pack), A3 about $14.25 (four-pack), C3 about $15 (two-pack). C-series heads target plaque, G-series gums, W-series stains, and the A3 is the premium all-rounder.
Sonicare model numbers, decoded
The HX number on the box tells you exactly which brush you’re getting. The ones on Amazon US in October 2026: 4100 is HX3681 (2021) or HX4031 (July 2026, with three intensities); 5300 is HX6423; 5900 is HX7133; 7300 is HX7420 to HX7423 depending on colour; the original 9900 Prestige is HX9990; the Next-Gen DiamondClean 9900 Prestige is HX9834; Sonicare for Kids is HX6321 (Bluetooth) or HX3601 (Design a Pet). The digits after the slash are the colour and pack.
Buying Sonicare safely
Buy from Amazon.com or Philips’ own store where you can. We found imported European Sonicares sold by resellers on Amazon US, including the 7100, and warranty claims on imports can get complicated. Check that the HX model number in the listing matches the brush you want.
Decode the number on the box
The code on the carton describes the package, not the motor, which is why two numbers can be the same brush.
Type the number on your box

A Philips Sonicare product code
The digits describe the box, not the motor: colour, how many heads, case or no case. Two codes can be the same brush.
HX90…
Usually a Sonicare head pack, not a handle
The head packs we priced on October 30 were HX9042 (C3 Two-in-One, two), HX9044 (C3 Premium Plaque Defence, four) and HX9094 (A3 Premium All-in-One, four). A low price plus a row of heads in the photo is the giveaway.
C1, C2, C3
Sonicare cleaning heads
All click on, and all fit any modern adult Sonicare handle.
G2, G3
Sonicare gum care heads
Softer bristles, same click-on fitting.
W2, W3
Sonicare whitening heads
A polishing cup in the middle. Keep these away from veneers and crowns.
A3
Sonicare All-in-One
Philips' premium head and the priciest regular refill we priced.

Nothing here matches. Codes change with every box, so search the number together with the brand and read what is listed in the box rather than trusting the number.
Handle codes are the ones printed on the listings we checked on Oct 30, 2026. Anything not listed is usually a store bundle or a head pack.
The one in the shop has a different number. Is it the same brush?
Usually yes. Philips in particular sells one handle under several numbers depending on what is in the box, and a club-store bundle is often the same motor with extra heads.
What we checkedAmazon US sells two Sonicare 4100 versions side by side at the same price: the older HX3681 and the July 2026 HX4031 with three intensities.
Our pick for thisPhilips Sonicare 5300Price
How much will the replacement heads cost me?
Roughly $30 to $60 a year per person at four heads a year, which over three years usually beats what you paid for the handle. Price the heads before you pick the brush, not after.
What we checkedGenuine heads we priced on Amazon US on October 30 ran from about $2.49 each (Aquasonic, eight in a box) to about $18.46 each (Quip Rev).

Things readers check with us
The Sonicare 5900 for most people, the 4100 to spend as little as possible, the 7300 for the app and charging case, and the Prestige 9900 if budget isn’t a concern.
Is the Sonicare 4100 discontinued?
No. It was refreshed in July 2026 as model HX4031, and the older HX3681 is still sold too.
Which Sonicare has a travel case?
The 5300 has a basic case. The 7300, Prestige 9900 and Next-Gen DiamondClean models have cases that charge the brush.
Do all Sonicare heads fit all Sonicare handles?
Current adult click-on heads fit all current adult handles. Kids’ handles and battery models use different heads.
