The iO9 is Oral-B’s best brush for people who like their gadgets to talk back. It’s also one of the most heavily discounted brushes on the market, which changes how you should think about it.
The display is the point
A small colour screen on the handle shows your mode, a timer, a pressure indicator and a smiley face when you’ve done two minutes. That sounds silly. In practice it means you get most of the app’s useful feedback without your phone, which is why the iO9 stays useful after the novelty of the app wears off.
Tracking
Oral-B’s 3D tracking estimates where the head is across 16 zones, including inside and outside surfaces. It’s the most detailed tracking on any mainstream brush. It isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough to show you the areas you regularly miss.
Seven modes
Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Intense, Whitening, Gum Care and Tongue Clean. Most people use two of them. Gum Care is a gentler, slower pattern that’s pleasant if your gums are tender; Tongue Clean runs at a lower speed for a tongue scraper head.

The charging case
The case doubles as a charger, so you can leave the stand at home. With about two weeks per charge plus the case, the iO9 is one of the easiest premium brushes to travel with.
What it costs to own
Same iO heads as the cheaper models, so the running cost is the same as an iO3. The difference is all in the handle.

iO9 or iO5?
The iO5 has the same motor, heads and app for about $120, but no screen and no charging case. With no current iO10 listing on Amazon US when we checked on October 30, 2026, the iO9 is the top of the range there. See iO5 vs iO9.
Will the iO9 clean better than my iO3?
No. Same motor, same heads, same cleaning. If you’re happy with your iO3, the iO9 is a comfort and feedback upgrade only.
What’s in the iO9 box
The listing we track (ASIN B0B5HSNPNH, model iOM9.4B2.2A, Aqua Alabaster) includes the handle, four heads, a charging travel case and Oral-B’s 3-hour fast charger. Four heads cover a year, which is worth about $30 at October’s prices and takes some of the sting out of the handle price.
Seven modes
Daily Clean, Intense, Whitening, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Gum Care and Tongue Clean. You pick them on the screen rather than counting button presses, which is the small luxury that makes people actually switch modes. Gum Care and Super Sensitive are the two worth knowing if your gums flare up.
Too hard, too soft, just right
The iO9’s pressure sensor shows red when you push too hard, white when you’re too light and green when you’re in the right range. The “too soft” warning is rarer than it sounds and genuinely useful: people who are nervous about their gums often under-brush, and the iO9 tells them.
The price problem
On October 30, 2026, the iO9 listing on Amazon US had no main offer from Amazon or Oral-B, so we couldn’t record a price. We used an estimate of $220 in our charts and marked it. Before you buy, check who the seller is, make sure it’s new rather than renewed, and compare against Oral-B’s own store. With the iO10 not listed on Amazon US when we checked, the iO9 is the top iO there.
Living with the charging case
The case charges the brush, so on a trip you carry one cable instead of the stand. At home most owners use the stand and keep the case for travel. Battery life is about two weeks either way.
iO9 or Sonicare 9900 Prestige?
Both are flagships with a charging case and an app. The iO9 tells you about pressure on its screen; the Prestige lowers its own power when you press too hard. The iO9’s heads are about $4 cheaper each. We’d pick the Prestige for receding gums and the iO9 for everyone else; our full comparison has the detail.
If you want a smart toothbrush, this is the one. It’s polished, the on-handle display makes the features useful every day, and the charging case is a real convenience. Wait for a sale; it comes around often.

Yes, with a soft or sensitive head on a gentle setting. What damages dental work is an abrasive whitening head worked hard along the margin, not the motor.

Can I take it abroad, and will it go on a plane?
On a plane yes: a sealed battery inside a brush travels in hand luggage. Abroad, read the base before you plug it in. Sonicare stands and USB-C handles are usually marked 100 to 240V and need only a plug adapter. Oral-B ships region-specific bases, and a US one often reads 110V, which needs a converter or a local base.
