Philips launched the 5900 on Amazon in December 2025 as part of a range refresh it calls “Feel the Care.” The headline is a re-engineered motor that Philips describes as its first major drivetrain upgrade in more than a decade, designed to deliver steadier power from the handle to the head, including at the back of the mouth.
What’s actually new
- The drivetrain. Philips says the new motor delivers consistent power at the bristles and quotes up to 62,000 bristle movements per minute for the range. Its marketing compares plaque removal against a manual brush, as all brushing claims do, so treat the big percentages as advertising.
- Three intensities and two modes. Six combinations in total, which is more control than the 4100’s two settings.
- Battery. Philips rates the 5700 and 5900 at up to 21 days, a real step up from the 4100’s 14.
How it compares with its siblings
Philips sells a near-identical 5700 through other stores. On Amazon US the step up is the 7300, which adds two modes, a light-ring pressure warning, the app and a charging case. Our 5900 vs 7300 page shows why the gap shrinks over three years.

Who should buy it
Anyone choosing a Sonicare to keep for the next several years. The lowest intensity setting makes it one of our favourite picks for sensitive teeth, and the long battery makes it easy to live with.
Is the new motor really better?
Philips says so, and the spec changes are real. What we can’t tell you yet is whether it holds up better or cleans measurably better than the 4100 over years of use, because the brush has only been on sale since January. If that uncertainty bothers you, the 4100 is the proven option. If you’re buying for the long term, the newer platform is the better bet.
Buying tip
Check the listing or box for the words “Next-Generation Sonicare technology.” Philips sells several similar-looking models, and some older ProtectiveClean stock is still around under confusing names.
What comes in the box
The 5900 we track (ASIN B0G3R825N5, HX7133/02, navy) includes the handle, two C3 Two-in-one heads and a USB-A charging stand. There’s no wall adapter and no case. It was sold by Amazon.com for about $90 on October 30, 2026, and first listed on December 7, 2025.
Two modes, three intensities
Clean and Gum Health, each at three intensity levels. That’s fewer modes than older Sonicares, and it’s the right number: the low intensity is gentle enough for sensitive teeth, Gum Health spends more effort on the gumline, and there’s nothing to scroll through.
The haptic pressure warning
Press too hard and the handle buzzes differently. It’s easier to notice than the old Sonicare pulse, but it’s still a feeling, not a light. People who need to see their pressure should look at the 7300.
BrushPacer every 20 seconds
The 5900 buzzes every 20 seconds instead of every 30, which splits two minutes into six areas. It’s a better match for how most hygienists teach brushing, and it stops you spending a minute on your front teeth.
The C3 head question
C3 Two-in-one refills were about $14.98 each on Amazon US, the priciest regular Sonicare heads we priced. You don’t have to stay with them: every click-on Sonicare head fits, and C2 Optimal Plaque Control heads at about $10.26 work perfectly well. Using C2s brings three-year ownership from about $240 down to about $195.
Battery
Philips rates it at up to 21 days per charge, half again as long as the 4100. For a two-week trip you can leave the stand at home.
Who should look at something else
If you want a pressure warning you can see, or a case for travel, the Sonicare 7300 adds both for about $50 more. If your budget stops at $50, the July 2026 4100 (HX4031) has three intensities too, without the Gum Health mode and longer battery. And if you prefer the feel of a round spinning head, no Sonicare will change your mind; look at the Oral-B iO3.
The best Sonicare for most people in 2026. More control and battery than the 4100, the new drivetrain, and a fair price. Buy the 4100 instead only if you want to spend as little as possible.

Can I take it abroad, and will it go on a plane?
On a plane yes: a sealed battery inside a brush travels in hand luggage. Abroad, read the base before you plug it in. Sonicare stands and USB-C handles are usually marked 100 to 240V and need only a plug adapter. Oral-B ships region-specific bases, and a US one often reads 110V, which needs a converter or a local base.
What we checkedOral-B’s own support page says its chargers are region specific and lists 110V, 220 to 240V and 100 to 240V bases separately. The number is printed on the underside.

Should I buy now or wait for a sale?
Oral-B and Sonicare handles discount hard and often, so if you are not replacing a dead brush this week, decide the price you will pay and wait for it. Heads almost never discount.
What we checkedThe iO3 is sold on Amazon US as a bundle with two heads and a case, which is why its list price sits higher than older reviews quote.
