Oral-B iO2 vs iO3
The iO3 for most adults: it adds the light ring that shows green at the right pressure and red when you scrub, plus a Whitening mode. The iO2 is about $50 cheaper and starts on a Super Sensitive setting, which makes it the better first electric brush.

The iO2 is Oral-B’s entry iO model, built for people switching from manual brushes, and it has been listed on Amazon US since July 2024. On October 30 it cost about $60, while the iO3 came only as a Limited bundle with two spare heads and a travel case for about $110, so the gap is wider than older comparisons suggest.

The motor
The iO3 has Oral-B’s frictionless magnetic drive. According to Electric Teeth, the iO2 uses a linear pulse drive instead. Both take iO heads and clean tooth by tooth, but the iO2 feels softer and less intense.
The pressure sensor
The iO2 slows itself down when you press too hard. The iO3 shows a light ring, green or red. If you want to learn the right pressure, the light is better. If you want protection without paying attention, the iO2’s approach is simpler.
Battery and charging
The iO2 runs longer between charges than any other iO model. It also takes longer to recharge fully, up to around 24 hours versus about 16 for the iO3.

Which to buy
iO2 for first-time electric brush users, sensitive mouths, older users, or anyone who forgets to charge.
iO3 for everyone else, especially people who press too hard or want the stronger, smoother iO clean.
What the Amazon prices include
The two prices aren’t for the same box. On Amazon US on October 30, the iO2 was about $60 for the handle, one iO head and a charger, in Pure White. The iO3 was about $110, but that listing is the iO3 Limited bundle: the handle, two heads and a travel case. Over three years, with a new head every three months, the iO2 comes to about $170 and the iO3 about $210, so the real gap is closer to $40 than $50.
Settings, one row each
The iO2 has Super Sensitive, Gentle and Daily Clean, and Oral-B says it starts on the super-sensitive setting. That default is the whole point of the brush: your first week with an Oral-B is much less of a shock. The iO3 has Daily Clean, Sensitive and Whitening. Most iO3 owners settle on Daily Clean; the Whitening mode varies the speed to polish surface stains.
How each one warns you
Both brushes react when you press too hard. The iO2 slows itself down and signals red, so you both feel and see it. The iO3’s light ring shows green when your pressure is right and red when it’s too much, which teaches a lighter touch faster because you also get confirmation when you’ve got it right.
Oral-B’s listing for the iO3 also mentions the gentle micro-vibrations it uses from the iO3 upwards; the iO2 listing doesn’t. In practice that’s part of why the iO3 feels smoother and the iO2 simpler.
Same heads, easy upgrade
Both take every iO head, including Gentle Care (about $12.20 each when we checked) and Ultimate Clean (about $10.20). If you start on an iO2 and later move to an iO3 or iO5, your spare heads carry over. Classic Oral-B heads for the Pro 1000 don’t fit either brush.
Buying for someone else
For a parent or a first-time user who just wants it to work, the iO2: one button, a gentle default and automatic slowing under pressure. For a partner who already uses an electric brush, the iO3: the light ring and Whitening mode are what they’ll notice. For a teenager in braces, the iO3, because the pressure light helps around brackets.
What if they’re the same price?
Then buy the iO3. The magnetic motor and visible pressure ring are worth having when they cost nothing extra. Two-handle iO2 bundles for couples are the main exception: they’re often cheap enough to tip the balance.
The one in the shop has a different number. Is it the same brush?
Usually yes. Philips in particular sells one handle under several numbers depending on what is in the box, and a club-store bundle is often the same motor with extra heads.
What we checkedAmazon US sells two Sonicare 4100 versions side by side at the same price: the older HX3681 and the July 2026 HX4031 with three intensities.

I already have heads. Will they fit a new handle?
Only inside the same family. Oral-B iO heads fit iO handles and nothing else, classic round heads fit every Oral-B that is not an iO, and any modern click-on Sonicare head fits any modern Sonicare handle.
What we checkedWe mapped every handle on this site to its head family and the price of a genuine pack.

Things readers check with us
The iO3 has the magnetic iO drive and a visible pressure light; the iO2 has a gentler linear pulse motor, automatic slow-down for pressure and longer battery life.
Do iO2 and iO3 use the same heads?
Yes, both use iO heads.
Which is better for beginners?
The iO2 was designed for people switching from manual brushes and is gentler. The iO3 is better if you’ll stick with electric long-term.
Does the Oral-B iO2 have a pressure light?
It signals red when you press too hard and slows the brush down at the same time. The iO3’s light ring adds a green signal that tells you when your pressure is right.
Is the iO2 or iO3 better for sensitive teeth?
For very sensitive teeth, the iO2, because it starts on Super Sensitive. The iO3 on Sensitive mode with a Gentle Care head suits most other sensitive mouths.
