The top-rated electric toothbrushes, and how to read the ratings
The brushes with the deepest owner track record are the Oral-B Pro 1000 (on Amazon since 2010), the Sonicare 4100 and the Aquasonic Black Series. Of the newer models, the Sonicare 5900 is off to a good start. We judge ratings by patterns, not star averages.

“Top rated” is slippery with toothbrushes. The same brush is often split across several Amazon listings by colour or bundle, each with its own score. Brand-new models start with a handful of reviews, and a single bad batch can drag them down. So we looked for brushes that have stayed well rated across years and tens of thousands of owners, then added newer models whose early feedback is solid.

How to read toothbrush ratings without being fooled
- Check how long the listing has existed. The Next-Gen DiamondClean 9900 Prestige went on sale on August 31, 2026; two months of reviews isn’t a track record.
- Look across colours. Different colours and bundles of the same brush can have different scores and very different review counts.
- Check who’s selling it. Resellers and imported units carry the same product page reviews but not always the same warranty.
- Read the one-star reviews for patterns. One dead unit is bad luck. Twenty reports of batteries dying at 13 months is a design problem.
Why we don’t print star ratings
Star averages change daily, Amazon’s associate rules limit how they can be shown, and they mix up very different things: delivery, packaging, a single faulty unit. We read reviews for patterns instead, such as batteries fading at the same age or chargers failing, and we lean on how long a brush has been sold and how widely it’s recommended.
Patterns worth taking seriously
A run of reviews describing the same failure after the same length of time, complaints about heads no longer being available, and reports that the brush received differs from the listing. One angry review means little; ten describing the same problem mean a lot.
Newer brushes we’re watching
Three 2026 brushes haven’t been on sale long enough to call proven, but are promising: the Laifen Wave Pro (January 2026), with its hybrid motion and long battery; the SURI Core (August 2026), a cheaper bio-based SURI with a pressure sensor; and the Next-Gen DiamondClean 9900 Prestige (August 2026), which adds a display and coverage feedback. We’ll move them up as owner experience builds.

Should I buy now or wait for a sale?
Oral-B and Sonicare handles discount hard and often, so if you are not replacing a dead brush this week, decide the price you will pay and wait for it. Heads almost never discount.
What we checkedThe iO3 is sold on Amazon US as a bundle with two heads and a case, which is why its list price sits higher than older reviews quote.

I have crowns, veneers or implants. Is a powered brush safe?
Yes, with a soft or sensitive head on a gentle setting. What damages dental work is an abrasive whitening head worked hard along the margin, not the motor.
What we checkedWhitening heads carry a polishing cup and stiffer bristles. Sensitive and gum care heads in the same packs do not.

Things readers check with us
Across years of owner feedback, the Oral-B Pro 1000 and Philips Sonicare 4100 stand out. Among newer models, the Sonicare 5900 has made a strong start.
Why do some new toothbrushes have low ratings?
New listings have few reviews, so a handful of early complaints moves the average a lot. Give them a few months.
Are Amazon ratings for toothbrushes reliable?
They’re useful for spotting patterns such as battery failures, less so for comparing cleaning, which owners can’t measure.
